Piper was my second hamster I got living in Oklahoma. We traveled all the way to Tulsa Oklahoma to get her. We got her at Petsmart. She was $19.99, that is a tad steep for a hamster, but she was very worth it.
Piper stood out from all the other hamsters at the petstore. She was the only one there that was all white with black speckles on her. I told the lady at the petstore I wanted to pick up some hamsters to see who was the most friendliest. The lady kind of made a random rude remark that I wouldn't be able to handle any of them for they were not tamed yet at all. However, I proved her wrong and picked up Piper w/out no problem.
You see I have had hamsters off and on since I was 25 years old, that is 7 years now. I know all sorts about hamsters, how to handle them, all there little body language and such. The certain language from a hamster that says it is ok to hold me right now and get to know me, or don't even attempt it I will snap at you and bite you.
I think they do drug there hamsters at Petsmart though, and I have heard of this, to make the animals get along with the other animals while in the petstore and not be so agressive. Because when I got home suddenly Piper didn't want to be handled so much anymore and praticily dove out of my hands. I didn't expect this because she had been so calm before.
Like all hamsters I bring home, I do give them a few days to get situated to my home and to there new environment. Then occasionally talk to them so they can become familar with me. I give them about a week adjustment period so they won't get too stressed out and overwhelmed. It took me a good month until Piper was fully tamed.
Since that time she has been such a sweet heart with me. Always wanting to run in her bally and come out and play with me. One weird thing though. Hamsters are not supposed to get along with other hamsters, but all mine had a certain bond. I never let them play together or anything because that could of resulted in a bad fight with them. However, Piper would seem to communicate with my other hamsters in between cages, and when they had out time in there run about balls. All my hamsters would follow each other around in the balls.
In fact one time, Piper escaped from her cage when we were sleeping at night. I found her in the funniest place, by Muffy's cage (another female hamster I have), they were just sniffing at each other not even acting agressive towards each other. I found that to be truly amazing.
Piper also loved music. Whenever I would listen to music at my computer, she would seem to boogie to it in her cage, or when she was out in her run about ball. Her favorite song was 'Rock the Casba', she would get so excited when I would sing this song to her, or she would hear this song playing.
